Royal Insurance -- 150 Years Old

Exactly 100 years ago,Conrad Roentgen introduced xrays to the world with this accidental image of his wife's hand. Now via a computer network, PACS allows doctors based in different cities to view and manipulate a medical image simultaneuosly.

Connectivity Provides
"Critical Link" in Hospitals Nationwide.

Imagine this. A critically injured patient in a New Jersey hospital is prepared for emergency surgery while three neural surgeons in other cities not only view the patient's x-rays, but actually manipulate, in real time, the x-rays to fully understand the location and the extent of the injury. Thanks to Siemens Business Services and their systems integration group, a partner of Siemens Medical Systems, this exciting technology, known as PACS (Picture Archive Communication Systems), is already in operation in hospitals around the country. To provide access of x-ray results within seconds, to enable physicians the ability to manipulate images on their monitors instantly, and to allow this information to be shared simultaneously within the medical organization, the network must perform flawlessly . "To meet these demands, the design of the physical layer network, the integrity of the cabling and the reliability of the electronics installations must be unsurpassed. That is why Connectivity was selected by Siemens as a partner for this assignment," said John Troy of Connectivity. "These are among the most challenging and consequential installations we have undertaken and the end result of our efforts has clearly established a benchmark with which to judge the caliber of our work." Siemens Business Services selected Connectivity for many hospital installations around the country, including Hackensack Medical Center, Memphis Medical Center, the University of Mississippi Medical Center at Jackson, and the Charity Hospital of New Orleans. "Beyond being an obvious and dramatic diagnostic tool, PACS has proven itself to be a remarkable management tool as well," says Mark Connolly Director of the Siemens Business Services Systems Integration Group. "Hospital management has quickly realized that the performance of their radiology departments could be significantly improved with PACS. From the financial perspective, the savings for hospitals on film, storage space, staff time, reproduction and replacement of lost x-rays is very significant." Royal Insurance: 150 years Old
and Set for the Next Century.

The phrase 'planning for the next century' is a somewhat overused cliché in corporate circles, yet for an international company about to enter its third century, the statement is an established way of life. Now celebrating its 150th anniversary, Royal Insurance has not only kept up with the times, but has lead the way. An example of this commitment is its recent computer network upgrade to category 5 standards. Royal Insurance, while headquartered in London, England, operates in the U.S. through its corporate support operations based in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition, numerous field offices are located in virtually every major market in the U.S. Such a corporate structure makes it essential that Royal Insurance maintain the fastest, most reliable computer network. Assuring that this criterion is met, VanStar, a nation-wide systems integrator based in Pleasanton, California, was selected to elevate the network to the highest level. Vanstar selected Connectivity to certify that all of the Royal Insurance LANs met category 5 standards, and if not, upgrade the LANs to that level. The project, ongoing for more than a year, included from 20 to 160 drops in about 30 locations nationwide, including Royal's Corporate Support Office in Charlotte, and offices in Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and Walnut Creek, California. John Troy of Connectivity, was both pleased to be selected by VanStar and gratified by the results. "VanStar brought us in as the physical layer support team for the Royal Insurance network roll out. We met every deadline and as a result ,VanStar was able to install all of the network hardware and software without a hitch," Anderson said. Mike Tegland of VanStar could not be more pleased. " I've enjoyed working with Connectivity. Connectivity has done an excellent job in managing their piece of the project and as a result we've been able to complete phase 1 of our roll out with a very satisfied customer," said Tegland.
